Metallica is back in action.

The thrash metal band shared an update from their band headquarters on Monday, where they’ve been busy at work preparing for an upcoming performance which will be filmed and screened at outdoor theaters across North America later this month.

According to the announcement hosted by drummer Lars Ulrich, Metallica and their team are gearing up for a private performance in the coming days which will be professionally shot and later screened at hundreds of drive-in and outdoor theaters across the United States and Canada on Saturday, August 29th. The one-night screening will mark the first rock band performance as part of the Encore Drive-In Nights concert film series.

“Encore Drive-In Nights showcase the world’s most iconic music stars with performances filmed exclusively for drive-in theaters across North America,” it reads on the series’ website. “From the safety of your vehicle, you get a night out to enjoy a cinematic concert experience under the summer sky.”

“We’ve been rehearsing at HQ for a show that will be shot especially for the drive-ins at a location nearby later this week and then we’ll pass it off to our award-winning production team to then be edited and mixed at the highest standards possible to be beamed into your cars from the big screen,” the band also added. “Needless to say, this is an exciting first for us, as we continue to explore new ways to connect with you and keep playing live… this definitely qualifies as a unique and memorable experience for us. We hope you think so too!”

Metallica had practically been on a nonstop global tour over the last four years in support of 2016’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct. Since the start of 2020 however, the famous metal band hasn’t played a single show and all tour plans for this year were shut down indefinitely upon the arrival of COVID-19 back in March.
