Michael Kiwanuka has given Brittany Howard‘s “13th Century Metal” an Afrobeat-inspired makeover as the latest remix of an original song off of Howard’s Grammy-nominated solo debutJaime. Released on Tuesday via ATO Records, the new version of “13th Century Metal” follows previously-shared remixes of “Goat Head” courtesy of EarthGang, and “Short and Sweet” as redone by Bon Iver.

The new version features the familiar static-y, spoken-word dialog as heard on the original recording, which is now given some extra emotional power thanks to the newly added rhythm parts that are reminiscent of West African styles

“I was so excited to get to work on this project as I’ve always been a big fan of Brittany’s music,” Kiwanuka added in a press statement. “Knowing this particular track and being such a fan of her voice, I wanted to not meddle with her voice, and then to make it front and center. She sounds so victorious when she sings and speaks, so the music I made was governed by that.”
