When Live For Live Music caught up with Grahame Lesh for an interview back in January, he mentioned that the band was gearing up to hit the studio for a fourth full-length album. While they had not planned to release the album until much later, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced Midnight North into quarantine, along with much of the world, the quartet decided to fast-track a single.
Elliott Peck takes over lead vocals on “Good Days”, whose lyrics touch upon themes of simplicity and appreciating the little things in life, such as enjoying quality time with a loved one. Lesh and Nathan Graham add vocal harmonies on the song’s refrain, “Those were the good days,” and ensuing chorus, while Jason Crosby‘s piano sits atop a steady and driving rhythm section from Graham and bassist Connor O’Sullivan, laying a punchy and upbeat foundation for the vocally dominated track.
“I had the chorus of ‘Good Days’ in my head a few weeks before I sat down on my parent’s porch in Charleston and worked out the melody and lyrics,” said Peck in a press release. “The picture in my mind was of a small rustic cabin, where two people were sharing their time and were happy enough with just each other’s company that they needed nothing else. The song touches on how we are a culture always in wanting, and when we really think about our happiest times, it was the simplest ones, when the company of someone was all we needed. Grahame filled out this story with his lyrical ideas on the verses, and Nathan added the exclamation point with the phrase about the birds.”
