Few would have guessed at the height of acclaimed jazz trumpeter Miles Davis‘ career that having a visual accompaniment to one’s recordings would one day be necessary for a career in the music industry. Davis lived just a few years into the MTV era of the American recording industry, but that hasn’t stopped his estate from finally allowing the first-ever music video to be made for one of his recordings nearly three decades after his death in 1991.

Released on Monday, Davis’ debut music video is a relaxing visual experience set to his recording of “Moon Dreams”, a jazz tune originally penned by Chummy MacGregor and Johnny Mercer which appeared on Davis’ 1957 compilation album, Birth of the Cool.

Directed by Nicolas Donatelli, the new video is the latest effort from Universal Music Group‘s “Never Made” series, which produces new music videos for classic recordings from artists who predate era of music videos. The 3:20 minute video keeps the storyline pretty simple as viewers are presented with an animated visualizer comprised of moving lines and colorful ribbons which form various shapes and silhouettes as the soothing music plays on.
