moe. kicked off an exciting two-night Halloween run at the Fillmore Philadelphia yesterday,  as part of their “Tarantinoe. Halloweenoe.” shows. moe. has taken to turning movies into themed concerts, including The Big Lebowski and Star Wars in recent years. By putting the emphasis on director Quentin Tarantino, the group had a bounty of material from which to draw. The only question was, how would they pull it off?

The night started with a debut cover of Dick Dale’s “Misirlou,” a la Pulp Fiction, before the band brought out their song “Crab Eyes” with rewritten lyrics. Re-named “Crazy 88,” the song was a reference to the Yakuza gang from Kill Bill Vol. 1. Watch that below, courtesy of 1Blackcard1 on YouTube.

They kept the set going with The Meters’ “Cissy Strut,” played in Jackie Brown, before debuting the Al Schnier penned song “Django.” Schnier had written the song for a Django Unchained casting call, and though it wasn’t chosen, he finally unveiled the track in a premiere on Live For Live Music last week.

The band then brought out the song “Stuck In The Middle With You” from Reservoir Dogs, and ended their set with “gimp.,” a parody of “meat.” that referenced a classic Pulp Fiction scene. Check out a snippet of “gimp.” below, courtesy of moe.

The second set started off with a cover of Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” a la Reservoir Dogs, which featured another moe. original parody called “Wolf Song” (aka “Bearsong”) in the middle. The Wolf is another classic Tarantino character from Pulp Fiction, and the band blended their original with the Tarantino movie well. After the conclusion of “Magic Carpet Ride,” the band treated their fans to a few classic moe. tunes, including “Buster” > “Jazz Wank” > “Four.” Finally, they closed the set with “Pussy Wagon,” a play off of their original “Paper Dragon” that referenced the opening scene of Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Watch guitarist Chuck Garvey shredding in “Four,” per the band’s Facebook.

With just an encore to go, the band returned and brought out another debut cover: “Woo Hoo” by 5.6.7.8.’s. The song is featured in Kill Bill Vol. 1 as well, and was an exciting way to get the encore started. Finally, moe. finished out the night with a classic cover in their arsenal, Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla.”
