MonoNeon released “Am I Trippin’? (OverthinkOverlove)” on Monday, offering a side of self-reflection along with a colossal serving of funk.
Known for his bass work with Prince and Ghost-Note, MonoNeon composed, performed, and recorded the solo track. While bass and drums dominate the danceable groove, it’s the poignant lyrics that play on themes of depression and the desire for brighter days.

“There’s something on my mind/That’s bringing me down inside/Can’t find my way out/Almost near the edge,” sings Mono at the beginning of the song. He backs off “the edge”, however, with the refrain, “Grief and joy surround me everyday/I guess I’ll stay around to see what it means to me/Am I trippin’?/I guess I have to believe/Overthink Overlove” Towards the end, Mono offers listeners, and himself, a bit of hope with the line, “It’s time to live again.”

As much of the world enters into its third month of the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdowns/quarantines that come along with it, many are struggling in their own ways. Mental health has always been a serious issue that some societies deal with better than others. In a time where access to health care outside of coronavirus-related issues is restricted, it’s important for those struggling with mental health to feel connected with those around them. While “Am I Trippin’?” is far from a cure, it serves as a tool, allowing fans to relate to the artist in a profound way. Listen to the track below and purchase it, via Bandcamp, here.
