Eccentric bass master and king of the quilt Dywane Thomas, Jr., better known as MonoNeon, celebrated his birthday with a pair of shows at Blue Note Jazz Club in New York on Saturday.

Dressed in a colorful ensemble made from a quilted bed comforter, hood up and his face covered with a knit mask and neon green sunglasses, MonoNeon marked his 32nd birthday with his band featuring drummer Mike Mitchell (a.k.a. Blaque Dynamite), guitarists Peter Knudsen and Xavier Lynn, and keyboardist Charlie Brown, plus a few special guests who dropped by to say “happy birthday” including lauded New Orleans trumpet player Nicholas Payton and Texas-native keyboardist Kwinton Grey.

Aside from the birthday cake and funky fart jams, one of the highlights of the night was a surprise appearance by enigmatic performance artist and holy fool Matthew Silver. Silver emerged from the audience and hopped on the stage before stripping down to his underwear and delivering an impassioned monologue about farting while MonoNeon supplied a backing track of flatulence using a pedal that makes his bass sound like farts. “Farts will liberate you!” Silver declared. “Farts will make you free. Play out your heart like a fart. God bless your butthole, the center of unity. … We are all one big butthole!”

MonoNeon has expressed his appreciation for Matthew Silver in the past, including in December of 2020 when he posted a song he composed based on one of Silver’s videos about comparing yourself to others. The bassist posted a video of Silver’s appearance at his birthday show with the caption, “This made me so happy!!!! Matthew Silver (@silver.matthew) came to fart with me at Blue Note.. 💫💩💫”
