Country star Morgan Wallen is facing some sobering consequences after a video of him yelling a racial slur in Nashville surfaced online. In the video, shared on Tuesday by TMZ, captured by a neighbor, Wallen is seen returning home from a night out. Per the initial report, Wallen and his friends caught the attention of neighbors with their honking and loud antics, prompting one to begin recording the scene.

“I’m embarrassed and sorry,” Wallen said in an apology to TMZ. “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.” Watch the video below.

In light of the video, the music industry has uniformly pulled back from the 27-year-old singer. In addition to facing harsh rebukes from peers in the country music world, his music has been pulled from various major radio station groups including iHeartMedia and Entercom, and his label, Big Loud, issued a statement noting that it had suspended Wallen’s contract indefinitely.

Whether or not you’ve wanted to, you’ve probably heard the name Morgan Wallen a lot in recent months. His latest record, Dangerous: The Double Album, racked up the biggest streaming week ever for a country album in its first week and has sat atop the Billboard 200 chart for each of the three weeks since its release. Wallen was even featured on the cover of the January 16, 2021 issue of Billboard. The feature, entitled “Country Without Borders,” included a subtitle that has not aged well in light of the most recent round of controversy: “How Morgan Wallen scored billions of streams, got a second chance from SNL – and became Nashville’s big bet for global stardom.”

Morgan Wallen made headlines in May of 2020 when he was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after getting kicked out of Kid Rock‘s bar in Nashville. Then, in October, Wallen had his invitation to perform on Saturday Night Live rescinded after videos of him partying maskless at crowded bars and making out with strangers went viral ahead of his scheduled appearance.

He apologized for his behavior and later returned to make his SNL debut in December, where he made light of his transgressions in a sketch in which he jokingly toasted to “no consequences” and lightly skewered his own recklessness alongside a “future” Wallen played by Jason Bateman.

This latest cycle of transgression and apology, however, is unlikely to peter out with a slap on the wrist and some self-deprecating humor. With the industry rapidly distancing itself from the singer, it appears that Morgan Wallen’s goodwill is running out. Watch an Entertainment Tonight report on the scandal below.
