On Friday night, two of the scene’s biggest funk acts, Galactic and The Motet, hosted a co-headlining performance at Morrison, CO’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre. New York City-based “cave music” trio Moon Hooch handled the evening’s opening duties, getting the energetic crowd dancing and on their feet out of the gates.

Galactic—comprised of Jeff Raines (guitar), Stanton Moore (drums), Robert Mercurio (bass), Ben Ellman (saxophone/harmonica), and Richard Vogel (keyboards)—took the stage following Moon Hooch’s opening set and worked through a career-spanning setlist in front of the Colorado crowd, welcoming touring vocalist Erica Falls for a number of songs.

Colorado’s own The Motet—currently comprised of Dave Watts (drums), Joey Porter (keys), Garret Sayers (bass), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Lyle Divinsky (vocals), Drew Sayers (sax), and Parris Flemming (trumpet)—took the stage after Galactic wrapped up their set. Special guests Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio Band), along with Jeff Franca (Thievery Corporation) gave The Motet some extra oomph throughout the entirety of the set.

Midway through the performance, Galactic’s Stanton Moore emerged on stage to round out a three-man drum jam, first hopping in on Franca’s percussion kit before joining Watts behind the drums. Erica Falls also joined in to take center stage alongside Hartswick and Cressman for a rendition of Janet Jackson‘s “What Have You Done For Me Lately”.
