Motown Records digitally released The Great March On Washington LP for the first time last week, which documents the audio from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

On August 23rd, 1963, executives from the Detroit-based Motown Records were on-site at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to document one of the most iconic events in American history. The recordings captured that day were rush-released in October of 1963, and featured speeches from civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph, United Automobile Workers president Walter ReutherRoy Wilkins, and Whitney Young, prior to Dr. King’s celebrated address.

Furthermore, the digital album also features Liz Lands and The Voices of Salvation, who performed “We Shall Overcome” to the 250,000 people who made their way to D.C. in support of the movement.

Universal Music president Bruce Resnikoff said in a statement,

We are privileged and honored to be entrusted by the MLK estate to oversee the release of his historic speech. As the long-time custodians of the Motown catalog and its legacy, we will ensure that the recordings of Dr. King will be available in the highest quality. We have gone back to the original source tapes to digitally remaster this release, and the clarity of Dr. King’s voice brings his message to today’s audience in a remarkable way.
