My Morning Jacket has announced the release of its first new studio album in six years. The band’s self-titled ninth studio LP is out on October 22nd via ATO Records and arrives alongside the lead single, “Regularly Scheduled Programming”, featuring a music video co-directed by frontman Jim James.
The new album marks MMJ’s first new studio output since 2015’s The Waterfall. Last year saw the indie-pop psych-rockers issue The Waterfall II, comprised of tracks recorded during the original 2015 sessions. My Morning Jacket is composed entirely of new material made in response to the tumultuous events of the past year and change.
“I hope this album brings people a lot of joy and relief, especially since we’ve all been cooped up for so long,” James said in a statement. “I know that feeling you get from driving around blasting music you love, or even lying in bed and crying to the music you love. The fact that we’re able to be a part of people’s lives in that way is so magical to us, and it feels really good that we’re still around to keep doing that.”
This album is only the latest in an ongoing storyline of rebirth for My Morning Jacket. The band emerged from a seemingly permanent hiatus in 2019 with four concerts, leading eventually to The Waterfall II, the announcement of its first U.S. headling tour in five years, and now a new album.
My Morning Jacket‘s lead single, “Regularly Scheduled Programming”, continues that timeline of redemption for the band. Both the single and its accompanying video use the band’s iconic, dreamy landscape of sounds to mask biting social criticisms of our shared cultural addictions.
“This song really hits home for me after what we’ve gone through with the pandemic,” James said of the single. “But even before then, it felt like so many of us were trading real life for social media, trading our own stories for the storylines on TV, trading our consciousness for drugs. We need to help each other wake up to real love before it’s too late.”
