My Morning Jacket has released its self-titled ninth studio LP via ATO Records.

The new album marks MMJ’s first new studio output since 2015’s The Waterfall. Last year saw the indie-pop psych-rockers issue The Waterfall II, comprised of tracks recorded during the original 2015 sessions. My Morning Jacket, on the other hand, is composed entirely of new material made in response to the tumultuous events of the past year and change.

“I hope this album brings people a lot of joy and relief, especially since we’ve all been cooped up for so long,” James said in a statement when the album was announced in August. “I know that feeling you get from driving around blasting music you love, or even lying in bed and crying to the music you love. The fact that we’re able to be a part of people’s lives in that way is so magical to us, and it feels really good that we’re still around to keep doing that.”

Produced and engineered by Jim James over two multi-week sessions at Los Angeles, CA’s 64 Sound, the album came to life after what looked like a permanent hiatus for the band. But after performing four shows in summer 2019, beginning with two memorable nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, My Morning Jacket was overcome with the urge to carry on.

That sense of purpose can be heard throughout the expansive new My Morning Jacket album. For all its unbridled joy, songs like the album-opening song “Regularly Scheduled Programming” and the otherworldly, closing “I Never Could Get Enough” once again reveal My Morning Jacket’s hunger for exploring the most nuanced and layered existential questions in song form while simultaneously harnessing the hypnotic intensity of their legendary live show more fully than ever before.

This album is only the latest step in an ongoing storyline of rebirth for My Morning Jacket. Following the release of The Waterfall II, the band proceeded its reformation with the announcement its first U.S. headling tour in five years. Despite some COVID-imposed setbacks, the tour began triumphantly in August and September with a string of festival and stadium shows.
