My Morning Jacket was back at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on Saturday for the second of two shows at the outdoor amphitheater following a nearly 17-month hiatus. Following night one on Friday, the band returned with a setlist filled with music from throughout their career as the rock band continues its very brief run of select 2019 performances over the next week.
The 22-song show started with “Wordless Chorus”, the atmospheric opening track from the band’s 2005 Z album, followed by “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1”. The band then returned to the Z tracklisting for “Off The Record” and “Lay Low”, only to then revisit their Tennessee Fire LP as it celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2019 with “Evelyn Is Not Real” and “Picture of You”. A climactic “Gideon” came next, followed by “Outta My System”, “Holdin On to Black Metal”, and “Evil Urges”.
The show’s energy was then brought down to a relaxing vibe with the performance of “Steam Engine”, which featured subtle teases of The Beatles‘ “Get Back”, John Lennon‘s “Imagine”, and Bill Withers‘ “Lean On Me”. The set continued with another softer tune in “Bermuda Highway” before picking the energy back up again for a pair of tracks from The Waterfall in “Big Decisions” and the mystic “Tropics (Erase Traces)”. “It Beats 4 U” came next, followed by another tune off The Waterfall with the feel-good vibes of “Compound Fracture”. The set closed with a performance of “Phone Went West” which featured a tease of another Beatles tune in “Hey June”.
The band returned to the stage for a five-song encore beginning with “Spring (Among the Living)”, “Magic Bullet”, and “Highly Suspicious”. After a performance of “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2” as the answer to “Pt. 1” earlier in the show, the performance came to a thrilling end with “One Big Holiday”.
