My Morning Jacket stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday to perform “Regularly Scheduled Programming”, the lead single from the band’s forthcoming, self-titled studio album.

“Regularly Scheduled Programming” initially arrived last month along with a cinematic music video. Both the single and its accompanying video use the band’s patented psych-rock soundscapes to underscore the lyrics’ allegorical commentary on the various addictions that ail our society.

“This song really hits home for me after what we’ve gone through with the pandemic,” James said of the single when it was released. “But even before then, it felt like so many of us were trading real life for social media, trading our own stories for the storylines on TV, trading our consciousness for drugs. We need to help each other wake up to real love before it’s too late.”

The Kimmel performance thematically mirrored the track’s music video. After starting with pretty colors and warm vibes, the tone shifted to darker, grittier rock as white strobes draped the band.
