My Morning Jacket got some local support during the band’s two-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre over the weekend from Colorado local Nathaniel Rateliff. The singer-songwriter and leader of The Night Sweats joined the group for a cover of Traffic‘s “Feelin’ Alright?”

On MMJ’s second night at Red Rocks, after welcoming opener M. Ward throughout the show, frontman Jim James launched into the Traffic cover adopted by Joe Cocker only for Rateliff to strut out just as the band hit the chorus. Rateliff and James batted around the vocals for the verses before Jim and the My Morning Jacket instrumentalists launched into a jam dripping with classic rock swagger. Rateliff, the leader of his own rodeo with The Night Sweats, simply kept the beat and vibed out as the band launched into a cataclysmic guitar duel.

Rateliff’s guest appearance was merely one mile marker on MMJ’s highlight-filled Red Rocks closer. Earlier in the show the band brought M. Ward for a number of tunes, including the debut of Yusuf/Cat Stevens‘ “The Wind”. The indie psychpoppers also pulled off a six-song encore that was built through numerous reprisals of “Cobra”.

Watch Nathaniel Rateliff sit in with My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks on “Feelin’ Alright?” Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats hit the road in September, and in November Rateliff will relaunch his And It’s Still Alright solo tour that was thwarted by the pandemic.
