Nell & The Flaming Lips appeared as the musical guest on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The four-plus minute performance saw the group reimagine a cover of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds‘ “Red Right Hand”.

Nell (birthname Nell Smith) first met Wayne Coyne at the age of 12 during a Canadian Flaming Lips show back in 2018. Coyne has since become a musical mentor for Nell, and the latest collaboration came back on November 26th with The Flaming Lips and Nell releasing Where the Viaduct Looms via Bella Union. The album comprised of nine Nick Cave cover songs, one of which the band brought to Stephen Colbert‘s show on Tuesday night.

Arriving as a seven-piece outfit, Nell & The Flaming Lips breathed life into “Red Right Hand”. Nell delivered rhythmic lead vocals on the track, backed by Coyne who also added some thunderous strikes on a timpani. Steven Drozd provided headstrong melodies on the keys while a dual attack on drums pairs well with the thump of the bass, adding cohesion to the riotous offering.
