Today, guitarist and composer Nels Cline, well-known for his work with Wilco since 2004, has announced the debut of a brand new project, The Nels Cline 4, along with the coming release of the outfit’s debut album, Currents, Constellations via Blue Note Records on April 13th.

The group has also shared the first taste of their sound in the form of a live in-studio rendition of “Imperfect 10”. As the band’s bio explains, “Cline’s first title for ‘Imperfect 10’ was ‘Jazz Fusion Composition’. ‘I think a couple of the guys are disappointed that it’s not still called that,’ Cline laughs. ‘It’s a straightforward rockin’ tune that’s fun to play. I suggested this beat to Tom that he does periodically, and once we started that it was off to the races.’ True to Cline’s alien jazz master aesthetic, the cut features plenty of the dissonant, complex, spaced-out interplay for which he’s become known. As Cline explains in his social media post introducing the new group:

Yes! In case you don’t know, the band features Julian Lage on electric guitar, Tom Rainey on drums, Scott Colley on bass, and yours truly on electric guitar. It will be available on vinyl, download, and even in the arcane format known as compact disc! Thanks to the gentlemen of the 4, to everyone at Blue Note, and to everyone else (you know who you are) who helped me get it all together for you, the ardent listener.
