In a city known for producing world-class musicians, few embody the spirit of New Orleans like jazz and funk drum legend Johnny Vidacovich. With his signature laid-back feel and unrestrained spontaneity, he has perhaps been more influential than any other New Orleans drummer, and he has shown his dedication to the community over many decades inspiring drummers like Galactic‘s Stanton Moore as a teacher at both Loyola University and the University of New Orleans. Now, the beloved musician needs our help.

According to a crowdsourcing campaign launched in his honor, the great Johnny V is facing “a challenging medical journey following spine surgery and may need a second depending on his recovery.” Donations will help cover critical medical expenses, rehabilitation and recovery costs, ongoing care and treatment, and “ensuring Johnny can continue creating and inspiring.”

“Known for capturing the city’s pulse with every beat and word, Johnny has been more than a musician. He’s a poet, a voice, a guardian of New Orleans’ musical essence,” the campaign description reads. “His drums speak volumes, translating the city’s emotions into intricate rhythms that have shaped generations of music. … The artist who has given so much to music and community needs our support to continue his healing and creative path.”
