The beloved festival has faced an uphill battle since its 50th edition in the spring of 2019. Both the 2020 and 2021 installments were planned, announced, postponed by several months, and later canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. Even after Jazz Fest and presenter Shell called off the October 2021 contingency in August 2021 and set their sights on the event’s typical late-April/early-May dates for 2022, the emergence and spread of new COVID-19 variants since then has continued to cast some doubt on large-scale gatherings in the near future.
