Conflicting reports regarding the future of Beats Music with Apple were published today, each citing sources from within Apple. One way or another, it does seem as though Apple’s long-term plan is rebrand Beats Music, as part of their mission to unify the Apple product line.

The first article was posted by TechCrunch, and asserted that a number of sources within Apple and Beats confirmed that Apple was planning to discontinue Beats. This was called into question, however, by the fact that Apple spent $3.2 billion on Beats Music earlier this year. Still, the article asserted that Apple did not place Beats Music on its new iPhone and Apple Watch products, and that other streaming services may have hampered Beats’ growth.

Later in the day, Re/Code published a two-word quote from Apple’s PR rep, Tom Neumayr: “Not true.” Neumayr declined to elaborate, but Re/Code included information from another source, saying that, over time, Apple was planning to merge Beats Music streaming service into its own product name. The article mentions the possibility of merging Beats Music with iTunes, given the recent $100 million partnership with U2 shows a strong inclination towards iTunes.

That Re/Code article was updated further, saying:

Apple has told Re/code that the Beats brand may go away, confirming my report. However, it wants to stay in streaming music, as we suspected.

As of now, it seems that Beats Music may be solidifed into the Apple name, though I can’t imagine why Apple would ever get rid of those glorious headphones. Meanwhile, here’s a picture of Dr. Dre laughing.
