Video streaming giant Netflix is really going all-in on its music-related content as the company and its reported 148 million worldwide subscribers prepare to start the new year with a fresh queue of films and shows to watch.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it is developing a scripted series about the creation of another industry-altering media platform, Spotify, the Swedish music streaming company which launched in 2008 and arrived in the United States in the summer of 2011.

According to the announcement, the limited series is still an untitled project and was inspired by Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud‘s 2019 book, Spotify Untold: How a Small Swedish Start-up Changed Music Forever. Per-Olav Sørensen will serve as director and Berna Levin is involved as the series’ executive producer.

A statement shared about the series’ premise reads,

At the height of piracy, established heavy-hitters were fighting against where the turbulent music industry was heading. The series centers around young Swedish tech entrepreneur, Daniel Ek, and his partner Martin Lorentzon, who revolutionized a whole industry by offering free and legal streamed music around the world. It is a story about how hard convictions, unrelenting will, access and big dreams can help small players challenge the status quo by evolving the way we can all listen to music.

“I’m thrilled to be making this timely and entertaining series for Netflix,” Levin added in a statement. “The story of how a small band of Swedish tech industry insiders transformed music – how we listen to it and how it’s made – is truly a tale for our time.”

Netflix’s Tesha Crawford, Director of International Originals Northern Europe, also added, “The founding tale of Spotify is a great example of how a local story can have a global impact. We are really excited about bringing this success story to life.”

Wednesday’s announcement of the Netflix Spotify series did not reveal a potential arrival date. It did, however, cap off a year in which Netflix released a handful of music-focused content, including Fyre Fest-inspired thriller series, The I-Land and the Rolling Thunder Revue documentary on Bob Dylan‘s infamous mid-’70s touring variety show. Other music-related projects which Netflix has announced recently include an Elvis Presley-inspired animated series and an animated adaptation of Paul McCartney‘s children’s book, High In The Clouds.
