Nik Greeley & The Operators have released “Can’t Explain”, the first single from the Philadelphia-based funk-soul outfit’s forthcoming album due out this summer.

Backed by the Operators, an outfit that includes members of Out of the Beardspace, Muscle Tough, Gnarbot, and the Ardmore Music Hall house band, singer-songwriter Nik Greeley belts out the feel-good jaunt with enthusiastic charisma. The track gradually builds from a smooth, Curtis Mayfield-like groove to a full, horn-backed howl, stopping over briefly in a swirling, organ-led breakdown.

As Greeley tells Live For Live Music, “It’s been a long time coming for us to put out new music, and we are feeling really great about what we’re about to share with y’all … When we’re able to get back on stage, we plan on taking things up an even higher notch with our live performances and energy.”

Along with the track’s release, Greeley and company have also shared a music video for “Can’t Explain”. The video, produced, engineered, directed by Operators drummer Joe Baldacci puts a spin on the familiar split-screen quarantine style with interlaced frames of the band’s members fading, drifting, and multiplying in and out as the song goes on. Though clearly a product of the ongoing lockdowns, the video for “Can’t Explain” manages to evoke the celebratory atmosphere of a true live performance.
