Fans gearing up to attend the LoveOly Summer Fest in Olympia, WA this past weekend were disappointed to learn that Jonathan Richman would not headline as planned on Saturday. However, the former Modern Lovers frontman—who made a notable cameo in There’s Something About Mary—didn’t bow out of the lineup for health reasons or a family emergency. Instead, he was forced to cancel because he didn’t even know he was supposed to perform.

It appears that the organizers of LoveOly were taken in by an imposter pretending to be Richman. Promoters were only made aware of the hoodwink on Friday when they tried to set up a pre-event interview between Richman and local radio DJ Mark ‘Markly’ Morrison. When staffers contacted Richman’s publicist Debbie Gulyas, they were met with utter bewilderment as Richman has still not performed live since the onset of the pandemic.

The Olympia Film Society, which books LoveOly, made fans aware of the lineup change on Friday, stating that they had “received a call from someone pretending to be Richman expressing his interest” in performing at the fest. Organizers felt it worth noting that Richman “has performed in Olympia many times over the past 20 years.”

“We are shocked that this happened. We’ve been booking bands for the past 30 years, and this is a first for us,” Audrey Henley, executive director of the Olympia Film Society, said in a statement. “We hope this does not in any way hurt our relationship with the real Jonathan Richman and that he will return to Olympia soon.”

The real Jonathan Richman, who found himself the bait in this unusual case of fraud, took the incident in stride, noting that there are “No hard feelings on my part and no apologies necessary from the wonderful people at [Olympia Film Society] who have invited me and Tommy [Larkins] up to play so many times.”

“Did the guy who called you up manage to imitate my voice pretty good? Cuz if he did, you’ve got to hand it to him, most people can’t do it!” Richman said in a statement. “But seriously now for just a second, I am sad for any disappointments and expenses caused to the Film Society and the fine people of Olympia. Of course I will come back to play for the Olympians!”

Organizers have stated that the Olympia Police Department is investigating the incident.
