On The Spot Trio is back with a dark and groovy new single, “Bounce House”. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Soulive drummer Alan Evans at Iron Wax Studios, the track is the band’s second single released via his Vintage League Music label featuring OTS’s new lineup of founding members Kris Yunker (keys) and Danny Mayer (guitar) alongside new drummer Andrew Klein. (The first was “Deep State”, which appeared on the Vintage League Music Family Album, Vol. 1 compilation in 2021.)
Stylistically, “Bounce House” marks a shift toward new musical ideas and soundscapes that reflects the changes On The Spot Trio has undergone in recent years. The song showcases Klein’s deep sense of groove and utilizes an unusual minor scale derived from Ethiopian jazz.
After spending time pursuing different musical projects independently, On The Spot Trio recently made its triumphant return to Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA, where the band played its first show together more than 15 years ago.
“It was the first time I had played with a band I had put together that meant something to me,” Mayer explained to Live For Live Music. “I recruited a bunch of musicians I knew to be in the band quickly, we didn’t even have a name. Then, I got a call from the local paper [to do a story about this new showcase of local artists]. We just kept saying that we threw it together ‘on the spot’ for the show, so we just said let’s call it On The Spot.”
OTS became the go-to support act for touring bands at Moe’s Alley, which is how the group first met Soulive drummer Alan Evans.
“That’s how we know everyone in the music scene, through this venue, because we were the local support,” Mayer—who along with Yunker played in Evans’s Playonbrother, now known as AE3—said.
Prior to the addition of Andrew Klein on drums, On The Spot Trio released “Hefe” and “Soquel” featuring Death Kings and Cool Cool Cool drummer Michelangelo Carubba (formerly of Turkuaz) in 2020. The band’s earlier releases include 2014’s Shag, 2012’s Soul Banshee EP and Suction 45, and 2010’s Straight Out The Garden.
