Oteil Burbridge welcomed fellow bass phenoms Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey during an Oteil Burbridge Trio set featuring guitarist Steve Kimock and his son John Kimock on drums. Originally billed as Oteil & Friends, the performance took place at NoDa Brewing Company NorthEnd Taproom in Charlotte, NC on Friday, August 19th as part of Queen City Jam Session.

Oteil Burbridge Trio headlined the first night of the event following earlier sets by artists including Delvon Lamar Organ Trio, Rebirth Brass Band, and The War & Treaty. Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey also performed earlier in the day with Bass Extremes featuring drummer Derico Watson. The band is currently on tour in support of its upcoming album, S’Low Downm, due out August 26th.

During their set, Wooten and Bailey welcomed Burbridge to sit in on a jam featuring just three basses and drums, plus vocal improvisations from Burbridge.

After adding the August 19th show to his schedule of Oteil Burbridge & Friends tour dates, which includes headlining performances throughout the month of September with a lineup featuring Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band) and Eric Krasno (Soulive) in addition to Steve and John Kimock, Burbridge announced on Thursday, the day before the show that the set would actually be a rare Oteil Burbridge Trio performance with the Kimocks.

The trio set featured jammed out interpretations of a number of Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia songs including “China Cat Sunflower”, “They Love Each Other”, “Sugaree”, “Deep Elem Blues”, “Scarlet Begonias”, and “Franklin’s Tower”. The highlight of the set came when Burbridge invited Wooten and Bailey to join the band on a lengthy, set-closing “Fire on the Mountain” that featured Burbridge on vocals and opened with looped kalimba played by John Kimock. With three bassists, guitar, drums, and percussion, the jam was definitely bass-heavy, but maybe not bass-extreme.
