San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival has revealed its plans for “Grass Lands,” a new area within the festival dedicated to “the celebration, education, and integration of cannabis products into daily life.”

Grass Lands invites attendees to “stop by and enjoy sweet treats from The Confectionery, learn from ‘budtenders’ at The Greenhouse, and explore activities like the Lemonade Stand, The Flower Shop, Farmers Market, The Smell Wall and more.” While the “21+ Town Square” will specifically not allow the purchase or consumption of cannabis products onsite at the festival, the new initiative looks to explore how legal weed and mainstream music festivals can coexist harmoniously in the near future. Outside Lands has also launched a new Instagram page (@olgrasslands) for Grass Lands, which provides information and updates about the new initiative.

Recreational marijuana officially became legal in the state of California at the beginning of this calendar year, but many of the state’s ongoing festivals and events have been timid in their approach to becoming weed-friendly. As Indio mega-fest Coachella, for example, explained in a statement ahead of this year’s event, “Sorry bro. Marijuana or marijuana products aren’t allowed inside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Even in 2018 and beyond.” In April, Victorville, CA’s Chalice Festival became the first Golden State festival to announce that they would allow recreational marijuana to be sold by vendors onsite. Of course, the celebration of all things Mary Jane has been that festival’s M.O. has since its inception, so their decision was likely an easier, more obvious one.

As Rick Farman, co-founder of Outside Lands promoter Superfly Presents, explained in a statement,

Outside Lands is always exploring different ways to create a unique and memorable festival experience for attendees, while also celebrating our Northern California community. Much the way that Wine Lands celebrates Napa and Sonoma as the leaders in U.S. wine production, Grass Lands will shine a light on the area’s importance as pioneers in the cannabis world. With recreational marijuana now legal in California, there is so much to discover. We are excited to be the first major festival in the country to offer attendees the chance to learn about the latest in cannabis development.

Outside Lands is set to take place at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park from Friday, August 10th through Monday, August 13th and feature performances from The WeekndFlorence + The MachineJaney JacksonFutureBeckOdeszaBon IverDJ SnakePortugal.
