As Papadosio prepares to take the stage at Smoky Mountain Event Center in Waynesville, NC for a special 15-year anniversary run of drive-in concerts this weekend, the band looked back at its previous appearance at the venue. On Tuesday, the Asheville, NC-based jamtronic outfit shared a live video of “Reishi” from its October 10th, 2020 show at the drive-in venue just outside of Asheville.

Taken from the band’s most recent album, 2020’s Microdosio, the song was actually a long time in the making. As keyboardist Sam Brouse explained ahead of the track, “This next song ran away from home for a while, then it was brought back to life.”

With the brothers Brouse laying down the tracks, guitarist Anthony Thogmartin pushes the train ahead as the band drops into the 8-bit beat. As is commonplace throughout the Microdosio album—as well as in the band’s new scaled-down Microdosio setup—operations have been simplified to their most basic functions. It’s with this newfound simplicity that the inherent musicianship of Papadosio is able to come to the forefront, particularly on new tracks like “Reishi”.

Though Papadosio is still prone to lengthy live jams, this telling of the Microdosio track keeps to a lean runtime of just under eight minutes. Despite the relative brevity of the live cut as compared to other, more time-tested tracks, the communal groupthink that exists between band members is able to take the improvisation to exciting new places in only half the time.

Watch Papadosio’s performance of “Reishi”, taken from the band’s 10/10/20 performance at the Smoky Mountain Event Center. The band is set to return to the venue on April 9th and 10th for a two-night, 15-year anniversary celebration. Tickets for those shows are still available here via the Asheville Music Hall.
