Fans of Perpetual Groove have waited a long time to hear Familiar Stare, the band’s first studio offering since 2010’s Heal and the first with the band’s original lineup since 2007’s LIVELOVEDIE. After overcoming some legal difficulties, Brock Butler masterfully leads P-Groove on the brand new EP, which the band has released today through their independent Bandcamp account.

The four-track album is filled with great music, capturing the slow and intoxicating beats that fans have come to know and love from Perpetual Groove. The album starts with “Fall,” a melodic number that was debuted earlier this year. “Best Of Anything” was also debuted recently, and features a more triumphant and powerful tone to entice the listener.

After the first two songs, the EP takes an upbeat turn into the drum-fueled introduction of “Lemurs.” The song opens up into a serious jam session, the type of high-soaring whimsy that fans have come to expect from a P-Groove instrumental breakdown. “Lemurs” is one of the oldest songs on the album, as it was debuted five years ago, but the new studio cut offers a fresh take on the familiar tune.

Finally, the album finishes with “Holy Ship.” With a stripped down intro that features both piano and vocals, the song builds with heavy drumming and the guitar section. It’s uplifting P Groove at their finest! With tight harmonies and great compositional flare, Perpetual Groove have set themselves on an upward trajectory with this great release.
