This past week’s season finale of Saturday Night Live saw Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, and Aidy Bryant all take their final bows at Studio 8H in New York’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza. For the hip-hop-loving Davidson, no goodbye would be complete without a tribute to two of his driving creative forces: Lorne Michaels and Eminem.
In a digital short entitled “Forgot About Lorne”, Davidson pays homage to the show’s creator, executive producer, and one of his biggest cheerleaders. Though there’s little in the entertainment world that Michaels hasn’t checked off his bucket list—from launching the careers of some of comedy’s biggest names to publicly pleading with The Beatles to reunite in 1976—one desire had still remained: to make a music video with Pete Davidson.
“You know what, that guy has literally done everything for me,” Davidson says to host Natasha Lyonne in the clip when she discovers Michaels’s discarded script for a music video. “So I’m going to pay him back by doing this rap video exactly the way he wrote it.”
In comes the beat from Slim Shady’s 1999 tribute “Forgot About Dre” as Davidson rattles off Michaels’s achievements while dressed as the man himself. From being the first man to wear jeans and a blazer to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom and even writing The Three Amigos, Davidson even sneaks in a shoutout to his fellow outgoing cast members before Marshall Mathers shows up to break up the party.
“This another parody, like another tribute or something?” asks Mathers, as confused as he is angered. “I would just stop. … It’s really bad.”
Eminem has evidently had enough of Pete’s “tributes,” which began back in 2020 with a Christmas-themed parody of “Stan”, entitled “Stu“, as Davidson obsessed over a still-hard-to-find PS5. The gag continued into 2021 as Davidson and Jack Harlow taught everyone about NFTs with a sendup of “Without Me”.
