On Friday, Phil Lesh & Friends kicked off a two-night run at Lesh’s own Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, CA. Lesh recruited guitarists Al Schnier (moe.) and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), drummer Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), and multi-instrumentalists Jason Crosby and Alex Koford for the weekend run.
Schnier handled lead vocals on a show-opening pairing of “Beat It On Down The Line” and “Tennessee Jed”. Luther Dickinson and Schnier traded off some bluesy guitar licks before Lesh led the sextet into “Friend Of The Devil”. Crosby got a chance to dazzle the crowd with a sensational solo on the keys, which was followed up by an electric take on Willie Dixon‘s “Little Red Rooster”, led by Luther on vocals. The six-piece ensemble charged forward with a pairing of the Grateful Dead‘s “Althea” and “Operator” before Schnier stepped back up front and center to lead the all-star cast through a rippin’ rendition of “Deal”.
Following a brief setbreak, Phil Lesh & Friends returned to open their second set with “Alligator”, off of the Grateful Dead’s psychedelic 1968 Anthem of the Sun release. With Cody Dickinson holding down a tight-knit rhythm behind the kit, Schnier led the band through a well-executed take on “They Love Each Other”. The sextet moved forward with exploratory takes on “Dark Star”, “Scarlet Begonias”, and a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “All Along The Watchtower” before crashing into a hard-hitting “Samson and Delilah”. Phil Lesh & Friends brought their second set to a close with “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” into “We Bid You Goodnight”. The band returned to offer up a lone encore of “Quinn The Eskimo”, marking the second Dylan cover of the evening.
