While the previous night’s Phish performance at Blossom focused on older material, the group brought back more originals and 3.0 debuts for their first night at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI.

Now with 18 shows at the historic venue in the books, Phish continues to surprise, amaze, entertain, and bring a great time wherever they may roam. Last night was no exception, as they opened with the new song “No Men In Man’s Land”, quickly becoming a fan favorite. The first set saw some interesting song selections: “Julius”, which hadn’t been played in the first set since 2013, “Frankie Says”, a tour debut, and “Mercury”, a new song played for the first time since the band’s two-night stint in Bend, OR.

They closed out the first frame with “Reba” and “Possum”, keeping the crowd grooving through a solid set of music.

The second set had more of a free-flowing feel to it, running straight from the set-opening “Down With Disease” through “Halley’s Comet” and “Twist”. A grouping of “Light > What’s The Use? > Fuego > Backwards Down The Number Line” came next, marking the first “What’s The Use?” in 30 shows. “Fuego” was particularly fiery, as that song, too, is gaining popularity in recent performances. “Slave to the Traffic Light” closed out a powerful second set.

One of the real highlights of the show was in the encore, as the band came out and performed “Meatstick”. Complete with Japanese lyrics and synchronized dancing, this song is always such a fun spectacle to catch at a Phish show. Never a dull moment. “Character Zero” brought it on home for a fantastic night one at Alpine Valley.

The band resumes their tour tonight for a second performance at the historic venue. As tonight is the 20th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s passing, will the band break out their first Grateful Dead cover in 17 years? We’ll have to wait and find out…

If you’re heading out on tour, don’t miss the Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Stratosphere All-Stars after party on August 11th, immediately after Phish’s performance at the Mann in Philadelphia. It’s going to be a night of great music, so don’t miss out! Click here for details.
