Now in the thick of their summer tour, Phish continues to impress, show after show. Just when you think you have the band figured out, they go out and play nine tour debuts in one night, including “The Lizards” and “Makisupa Policeman” back-to-back in a scorching second set.

Returning to the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH for the seventh time, dating all the way back to 1992, Phish seemed to be channelling their younger selves at the familiar venue. While the emphasis of this tour has been new music, with tracks like “Blaze On” and “No Men In No Man’s Land” in heavy rotation, at Blossom, Phish only played one song debutd in the 3.0 era: “Wingsuit”.

In fact, they only played one song from the 2.0 era as well, the show opener “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing”. From there, they dove into “My Sweet One”, “Wilson”, and “Timber (Jerry)”, bringing out each song for the first time on this summer tour. Next up was another tour debut, a cover of Ween’s “Roses Are Free”. Afterwards, Trey Anastasio implored Gene Ween and Dean Ween, aka Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, to reunite the band. We’ll see if they get the message.

You can read Anastasio’s full quote here.

After a grooving “Rift” and a slowed-down “Moma”, the band broke out “Ginseng Sullivan” for the first time this tour. “Wingsuit” came out next, followed by “It’s Ice” and a rocking “Bathtub Gin” to close out set one.

While the first set certainly had its highlights, the second set was all fire. Opening with a frenzied “Chalk Dust Torture”, the band switched keys from E -> A in the jam and get down to business. Anastasio and Page McConnell kept the jam going with a light touch, until the mood took a heavier turn. This led the group into the opening notes of “Tweezer”, and despite some miscues early on, Phish brought the heat through the jam. A subtle switch allowed the group to segue seamlessly into “The Lizards”, played for the first time since last summer.

Executed to perfection, “The Lizards” was a huge surprise and had the crowd on their toes. The band kept the energy alive with “Makisupa Policeman”, with Anastasio referencing “vapes” in his playful lyrical improvisation. That gave way to “Ghost”, into “Harry Hood”, into “Tweezer Reprise”. Wow!

Finally, Phish closed with their exciting cover of “Good Times Bad Times” by Led Zeppelin. The group has been crushing this cover since 1986, and they never fail to bring the energy on this rockin’ tune.

With nine tour debuts (“My Sweet One”, “Wilson”, “Timber”, “Roses Are Free”, “Ginseng Sullivan”, “It’s Ice”, “The Lizards”, “Makisupa”, “GTBT”) in one night, Phish was clearly cleaning out their extensive musical suitcase. Digging deep into their catalog, Phish delivered a rousing performance for their one-off show in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Next up is a two-night run in Alpine Valley, WI, beginning tonight.

If you’re heading out on tour, don’t miss the Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Stratosphere All-Stars after party on August 11th, immediately after Phish’s performance at the Mann in Philadelphia, PA. It’s going to be a night of great music, so don’t miss out! Click here for details.
