Nashville singer-songwriter Maggie Rose got some help from Phish bassist Mike Gordon at her Halloween show on Thursday night. The aptly spooky collaboration marked Gordon’s second sit-in with Rose and her band following their chance encounter at Burlington, VT’s Nectar’s in September.
With the stage adorned by cobwebs and other Halloween accouterments, Rose and her band worked their way through songs from her 2024 LP No One Gets Out Alive, a howling take on Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”, and more. Following a rousing run through her longtime live staple “Smooth”, Maggie Rose (dressed as a vampire) welcomed Mike Gordon (in devil horns) on bass for a stab at The Cranberries’ Halloween-appropriate hit “Zombie” and a lively cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post”. The Phish bassist then left the stage ahead of a set-closing “No One Gets Out Alive”.

For the show’s encore, Rose and the band lurked back onstage with vocalist Billy Allen (who opened the show with his band, Billy Allen + The Pollies) and channeled the funk of forty thousand years with a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. While Mike Gordon didn’t play along with the band on the final number, he did take the stage midway through the song for an impassioned reading of its Vincent Price-originated spoken-word narration while Rose led a “Thriller” dance flash mob in the audience.
