Phish returned to Pittsburgh, PA’s Petersen Events Center on Tuesday night for one of the summer’s few one-off dates and treated the crowd to yet another high-quality show highlighted by a number of rare setlist selections and a five-song second frame featuring a “You Enjoy Myself” opener and probing, 42-minute “What’s Going Through Your Mind” jam.

Trey AnastasioJon FishmanMike Gordon, and Page McConnell got their first Pittsburgh show since 2019 on the road with a strong “AC/DC Bag” and a pair of relative rarities: canine kleptomania blues vamp “Dogs Stole Things” (last played on 7/31/22) and bluegrass gospel prison lament “Paul and Silas” (last played 7/22/16). After churning through a moody “I Always Wanted It This Way”, Phish opted for “Water in the Sky”, the longtime first-set staple which had surprisingly gone unused for more than 130 shows (last played 7/15/22), the longest gap in its nearly 30-year history.

“Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan”, while brief, ignited in its final few minutes (and we’re not just talking about Fishman’s flaming donut muumuu), leaving a smoking crater of blank space where fans’ minds should be. While a sunny “Ya Mar”, a particularly flavorful “Gumbo”, and an always-energizing “Walls of the Cave” were still on deck to close the first set, it was the “Stealing Time” refrain that seemed to linger over the Petersen Events Center crowd as the band returned from setbreak.

How would Phish occupy that blank space in the minds of the Pittsburgh fanbase during Tuesday’s second frame? After a set-opening “You Enjoy Myself” primer blasted through the back of its vocal jam for several minutes of bonus funk improv and peaceful, lullaby vamps (read: “we’re about to have some fun with this”), the band filled the cognitive vacuum with a sprawling take on 2024 improv rookie of the year “What’s Going Through Your Mind” that stretched past the 42-minute mark.

A clear favorite of the band’s from its latest batch of tunes, “What’s Going Through Your Mind”, has now been played live by Phish nine total times dating back to last summer, and no less than six of those renditions have produced noteworthy improvisational tangents. From its debut with help from Billy Strings in Michigan to its weekend-highlight showing at last summer’s Mondegreen festival to its EDM-ified appearance on New Year’s Eve at Madison Square Garden, Phish has rapidly elevated the adaptable “What’s Going Through Your Mind” to perennial setlist centerpiece status.

Last night’s version was no different. Beyond showcasing the band’s affinity for the song as a launchpad, the Pittsburgh “Mind” was emblematic of the textural, patient, watercolor sonic palette of 2025 Phish improv. Even as the band cycled from one distinct-sounding segment to the next, the constant flow of ideas from the individual band members ensured that each new movement sprouted organically from a thought process already in play.

A 42-minute jam—among the top ten longest in the band’s four-decade-plus history—is always going to dominate headlines (see above). This one was surely a rich, detailed entry worthy of revisiting, the kind of expedition you don’t get unless all the synapses in the Phish hive mind are firing with a vengeance. Usually, that point doesn’t come until late in the season. The fact that the 42-minute Pittsburgh “What’s Going Through Your Mind” may not even be the best jam of the tour’s first four shows is a testament to the sterling quality of this summer so far.

When the brainstorm of the Pittsburgh “What’s Going Through Your Mind” finally subsided, three joyous, energetic sing-alongs—”Prince Caspian”, “Julius”, and “Blaze On”—served as the yinz (sorry) to the preceding jam’s yang to close the five-song second set.

For the encore, the band returned to the Sci-Fi Soldier well for the second time in as many shows with a take on “The Howling” that maintained the murky, layered M.O. of “What’s Going Through Your Mind”. Still not ready to let the night end, Phish capped the gloomy proceedings with a funky “Ghost”, the last five minutes of which felt and sounded like an adrenaline-fueled dash to the bright, white lights of the finish line. Cue pandemonium in Pittsburgh…
