Phish will serve as musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, July 11th, NBC announced on Friday. The foundational jam band is out on the press circuit promoting its forthcoming album, Evolve, which drops the day after the Fallon appearance.
Thursday’s performance will come eight years after Phish’s last trip to The Tonight Show on October 10th, 2016 in support of the band’s then-new album Big Boat (when guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s shirt stole the show). While the band wasn’t able to appear on the program in April 2020 to celebrate the release of Sigma Oasis, Trey did make a pandemic-altered appearance in August to promote his quarantine solo album Lonely Trip. Instead of Mike Gordon, Page McConnell, and Jon Fishman, Trey teamed up with the show’s house band The Roots for his pandemic rocker “I Never Needed You Like This Before” as the show’s first in-person musical guest amid the slow return to normalcy following quarantine.
This upcoming appearance marks the latest press appearance for Trey, who in the past month has spoken to Vulture for a listicle on Phish’s “Best and Weirdest Music” and to comedian and podcast host Marc Maron for a forthcoming episode of WTF with Marc Maron. The latest media blitz also arrived on a wave of publicity from the band’s historic four-night run at Sphere, which made Phish the second-ever band to play at the groundbreaking new venue in Las Vegas. Ahead of and during that run, Trey sat for interviews with the Associated Press, CBS, CNN, The Washington Post, and more, as the cult-favorite band was blasted to the forefront of the national news cycle.
Tune in to NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, July 11th to see Phish perform. Nick Jonas will serve as the featured guest.
