Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Keeps It Funky For The "Drunk People" At Paradise Music & Beer Festival [Photos]

On Saturday night, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong flocked to Newport, Kentucky, for their headlining performance at Paradise Music & Beer Festival at Wooden Cask Brewing.

Following afternoon sets from SolEcho, Litz, Peridoni, and Ernie Johnson From Detroit, the band took the stage for the penultimate performance of the evening. The Pigeons party got started early as guitarist Jeremy Schon joined the band for a guest appearance.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong took the stage at 10 p.m. for their first of two sets. The band kept things funky from the start, opening with “Funk E. Zekiel”. From there, they moved into “Landing”, which morphed into an improvised jam section and eventually found its way into “Funky House”, followed by “Live It Up” and “Sail On”. Next, the band welcomed out the horns section from Ernie Johnson From Detroit for an extra funky rendition of “Doc” before capping their first set with a “Burning Up My Time” that fed into a set-closing “Spacejam” > “The Hop” > “F.U.”

After some set-break tunes from Peridoni, Pigeons’ second set kept the fan favorites coming. After a “Whoopie” opener, a “Time To Ride” > “Kiwi” > “Time To Ride” jam sandwich kept the set chugging along. “Fortress” was up next, followed by “Avalanche” and “Ocean Flows” to round out Pigeons’ second frame. Finally, in a nod to the event’s brewery locale, the band returned to the stage for an amusing “Drunk People” encore.

This marks the second time in as many weekends that Pigeons Playing Ping Pong welcomed guest horns during a headlining set at a brewery festival. The previous Friday, June 22nd, the band welcomed saxophonist Rob Somerville (Deep Banana Blackout/Kung Fu) as part of their performance as part of Road Jam Music Fest at Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford, CT.
