Pigeons Playing Ping Pong floated back into view on Tuesday on the wings of a chilled-out new single, “Alright Tonight”. The standalone track arrives as the funky Baltimore foursome’s first new release since their 2022 album Perspective.

“Alright Tonight” takes some of Pigeons’ familiar elements and dials the throttle back a bit. Lead guitarist Jeremy Schon‘s guitar eases into the track with repeated notes awash in effects while singer/guitarist Greg Ormont steps to the forefront with a soft touch, delivering introspective lyrics that show off the growing maturity in the band’s songwriting. While Pigeons Playing Ping Pong built a reputation over the past decade with high-flying performances, tracks like “Alright Tonight” point to the group’s longevity as the quartet continues to evolve.

One specific sign of that growth arrives with Greg’s first in-studio guitar solo in the band’s discography. “We had just finished playing a different song at band practice when I started singing the initial guitar line, which I then played,” Ormont recalls of the song’s origin. “Gator [Alex Petropulos, drummer] joined with a slick drum groove, then Jeremy and Ben [Carrey, bassist] developed a unique chord progression that wrapped perfectly around the melody, and my vocals started flowing. From there, we put our minds on it and fleshed it out pretty quickly. We always listen back later to fine tune and add more parts where appropriate, but the initial genesis of this song was really organic, which is always a great sign.”
