Pigeons Playing Ping Pong kept their fall tour rolling with their trademark mix of energizing funk and showmanship with a performance at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, MI on Friday. The show marked PPPP’s third and final show on the tour with Dizgo as the support act, and even featured the live debut of a 2000’s hip-hop classic during the second set.
Pigeons opened their two-set headlining performance with “Too Long” and “Henrietta” before moving into a two-song, three-part segue of “Funk E Zekiel” into “Hold On I’m Coming” and back to “Zekiel”. “Melting Lights” then followed only to eventually transition into “Offshoot”. Following a brief pause, the music kept rolling with “Paperboy” and “High As Five” to send fans into set break.
The second half of the show started with “Upfunk”, which moved into a drum section from Alex Petropulos before returning back to the core of “Upfunk”. Following “Fortress” and “Whoopie”, Pigeons started into “Kiwi” before grooving right into their debut cover of Eminem‘s “Lose Yourself” from 2002’s 8 Mile soundtrack—an energizing, Detroit-appropriate sing-a-long moment for the Millenials in the audience.
The band kept the fun(k) rolling right into “Yo Soy Fiesta” to end the three-song segue. The set came to a close following “Walk Outside” and “Avalanche”, followed by a lively one-song encore of “Fun in Funk” to end the show.
