Pigeons Playing Ping Pong delivered the band’s first new single since January 2020 with “Indiglo”. Released on Friday, the standalone track features keyboardist Zach Gill (ALO).
The new single from the Baltimore aviary foursome (turned fivesome) strikes at the heart of the return of live music as bands around the country get back on the road. Enmeshed in PPPP’s trademark, laid-back funk stylings is a sincere appreciation for a return to the nomadic lifestyle of a musician with the refrain, “we’re on the road again.” Together with Gill providing a comfortable backdrop of keyboards, lead guitarist Jeremy Schon is further able to texturize the studio track into a sonic environment that’s both new and familiar.
“The chorus of our new single ‘Indiglo’ has never sounded sweeter, “we’re on the road again!” Frontman Greg Ormont said in a press release. “I’m so happy that this peppy tune finally got the studio treatment it deserves, complete with the lively keyboard stylings of our friend Zach Gill of ALO. Its release comes at the perfect time as we’re finally back on tour doing what we love and I hope it resonates with anyone who’s ready to do the same.”
The track marks Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s first studio release since 2020’s Presto album. The single was recorded and mixed by Steve Wright (Mos Def, Slipknot) at Wright Way Studios and mastered by Tony Eichler (Disney, Netflix). “Indiglo” is one of Pigeons’ earliest compositions, with live recordings dating back as far as 2010. The song has tapered off in recent years, however, with Phantasy Tour showing only 11 performances since 5/19/17.
