This past Friday, June 22nd, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong headed to Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford, CT for their Friday headlining performance at the fifth-annual Road Jam Music Fest.

Following a performance by local stalwarts Deep Banana Blackout, Pigeons took the stage for their day one headlining slot. The Baltimore-native jam-funk quartet worked their way through a number of their go-t0 live numbers including “Walk Outside”, “Time to Ride”, and “Henrietta” to kick things off. Next, “Melting Lights” began a non-stop stretch of segued tunes, with lighting designer Manny Newman appropriately showing off his dizzying light rig. “Live It Up” flowed seamlessly from there, before relenting into the sunny sounds of Pigeons favorite, “Poseidon”. The band’s take on “Poseidon” also contained a jam on classic Allman Brothers Band instrumental, “Jessica”, from guitarists Jeremy Schon and Greg Ormont in addition to a hearty helping of improvisation.

After a brief pause, the band began an extended, upbeat “Upfunk” featuring a “Drums” jam by drummer Alex Petropulos. Finally, Ben Carrey‘s funky bass groove signaled the start of a “Spacejam” > “The Hop” > “F.U.” segment to bring the set to a close, with Deep Banana Blackout (and Kung Fu) saxophonist Rob Somerville stepping in to add some brass to the final tune.
