What started as an enthusiastic pre-summer concert ended in chaos yesterday, as police stationed outside the Hot 97 Summer Jam used tear gas on swarms of people trying to enter the event. Taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, the hired security became overwhelmed with fans trying to enter without tickets, to the point where the state police were forced to intervene.

The daylong festival, promoted as the “hottest hip hop event of the year,” was so overcrowded with gate crashers that people with actual tickets were being asked to leave (though they will be refunded). Featuring performances from Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Big Sean, the seemingly poorly-planned festival had to shut its gates to prevent a further situation.
As of now, fortunately, no injuries are being reported.
