As part of last weekend’s Kennedy Center Honors celebration, a number of celebrities, political figures, and musicians paid homage to the Grateful Dead, from President Joe Biden and late-night TV legend David Letterman to actor Miles Teller and singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers, but one of the most unexpected tributes was Queen Latifah performing “Shakedown Street”.
Videos of the many musical performances from Sunday’s ceremony have been slow to trickle out ahead of the broadcast premiere on Sunday, December 22nd, but one of the first clips to surface is of Queen Latifah’s take on the disco-tinged Grateful Dead staple. Her majesty was the ceremony’s host, but apparently she got to perform some music too, and from the short clip we found, her version of “Shakedown Street” was quite the production.
Complete with dazzling Broadway-esque choreography, the performance put a new spin on the tune, with the Queen singing center stage, backed by a full band and surrounded by a cast of dancers. Not unlike the “spinners” that twirl along to the music at Grateful Dead shows, the dancers pirouetted with grace. The iconic dancing bears even made an appearance during the number, as one costumed performer can be seen exiting the stage at the start of the clip.
Watch Queen Latifah honor the Grateful Dead with a cover of “Shakedown Street” at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony and stay tuned for more coverage of the evening’s musical tributes.
