Today, September 5th, marks what would have been the 70th birthday of Freddie Mercury, beloved lead singer of the band Queen. Though Mercury passed away in 1991, his legendary vocals still loom large in the hearts of the band’s millions of followers, and of course in the bandmates whom he left behind.

One such bandmate, guitarist Brian May, gave his singer a very special gift to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his birth. At a birthday celebration for Mercury, May announced, “henceforth this object will be known as Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury.  This announcement is to recognise Freddie’s outstanding influence in the world.”

May is not only a guitarist, but holds a PhD in astrophysics as well. You can watch him announcing the ne dedication in the video below.

Happy birthday Freddie. We miss you.
