According to an announcement shared late last week by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Roots drummer and bandleader on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will appear and hopefully perform in some capacity during the televised event. Additionally, the Academy announced all five nominated songs for “Best Original Song” will be performed by the artists who introduced them in the films.

Questlove–real name, Ahmir Thompson–is starting to make moves to have more of a presence within the film side of the entertainment industry, as earlier this year it was reported he will direct a forthcoming documentary on the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 to be titled, Black Woodstock.

Questlove’s film career will continue to grow as 2020 continues as the drummer is set to appear in the new Pixar animated film Soul, due out this summer on June 19th. The film also features a score composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

The Roots and Questlove recently paid tribute to late RUSH drummer Neil Peart during an episode of The Tonight Show. Check out footage from the band’s Peart-inspired performances below.
