Rage Against The Machine on Tuesday canceled the band’s long-awaited 2023 North American tour. The news comes as frontman Zack de la Rocha continues to recover from a leg injury sustained while performing in Chicago on the second night of the tour. The band had previously canceled the U.K. and European legs of the Public Service Announcement Tour, which had already been rescheduled numerous times due to the pandemic, leaving a five-night summer run at Madison Square Garden as the tour’s final stop.

“It’s been almost three months since Chicago, and I still look down at my leg in disbelief,” the frontman wrote on the band’s social media. “Two years of waiting through the pandemic, hoping we would have an opening to be a band again and continue the work we started 30 some odd years ago. Rehearsing, training, reconciling, working our way back to form. Then one and a half shows into it and my tendon tears. Felt like a sick joke the universe played on me. As I write this I remind myself it’s just bad circumstances. Just a fucked up moment.”

The vocalist went on to explain that his injury was much worse than previously thought, even as he went on to finish out the North American run of shows performing while seated. De la Rocha revealed he has a severe tear in his left Achilles tendon and only 8% of the tendon was left intact. “It’s not simply a question of being able to perform again, but extends to basic functionality going forward.” Thus, the MC has elected to cancel the remaining 2023 North American leg of the Rage Against The Machine tour.

“I hate cancelling [sic] shows. I hate disappointing our fans,” De la Rocha continued. “You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me. I never take that for granted. For you I have the ultimate gratitude and respect.”
