The New Jersey-based quintet Railroad Earth played their first of four New Year’s shows on Friday at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The hotel is best known as the setting of The Shining—a novel by Stephen King that was reimagined on the silver screen by Stanley Kubrick—and acted as an eerie backdrop to the band’s “Chasing A Rainbow” theme.

Matt Slocum (keys) and Mike Robinson (pedal steel/guitar/banjo) joined Todd Sheaffer (guitar/vocals), Tim Carbone (violin/guitar/accordion/vocals), John Skehan (mandolin/Irish bouzouki/vocals), Carey Harmon (drums/percussion/vocals), and Andrew Altman (bass) for the duration of the show.

The bluegrass-inspired Americana and Rock n’ Roll act provided fans with two sets of original tunes and exquisite improvisation. Railroad Earth adds drums and electric guitars to their bluegrass melodies to create a unique sonic experience.

Standalone versions of “Walk Beside Me”, “420”, “When The Sun Gets In Your Blood”, and “Came Up Smilin'” kicked-off set one. The seven-piece then worked their way through a “Crossing the Gap” > “The Forecast” segue, two tunes off their 2008 release Amen Corner.

The segues continued as “The Forecast” drove into “Farewell to Isinglass”. They pushed forward into “Grandfather Mountain”, a song from their 2014 album The Last of the Outlaws, to close the lid on set one.

Set two began with a song from their first album Bird in a House, “Saddle Of The Sun”. A take on “Storms” segued to “Chasin’ A Rainbow”, playing well with the theme of the night. “Black Bear” and a “Dance Around Molly” > “Dandelion Wine” segue brought the show to the midpoint of set two.

“Only By The Light” > “Colorado” > “Captain Nowhere” followed before “Mighty River” and “Happy Song” ended the show. Railroad Earth was not done with night one at the Stanley Hotel just yet, however. For their one-song encore, they played one of their newest releases, “The Great Divide”, off their forthcoming Anders Osborne-produced album All For The Song.

The Railroad Earth New Year’s run is just getting started. After one more show at The Stanley Hotel (12/28), the five-piece will make their way to The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia for two more shows on December 30th and 31st.

A limited number of additional two-day passes for the upcoming shows at The Variety Playhouse have just been released. Click here for more information.
