From the biggest stars to the lowest on the lineup, everyone started off touring in vans. Well, everyone except Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.

In a new trailer for the Dave Grohl-directed documentary What Drives Us—out now exclusively through The Coda Collection on Amazon Prime—top-billed musicians from Ringo StarrFleaBrian JohnsonSt. Vincent, and more fondly reminisce on their time spent traversing the country in a van. While it may not have been the most glamourous of circumstances, each musician adamantly states that it was that time on the road—crammed into confine spaces with the same few people every day—that made their music and their friendship stronger.

“It was the greatest thing you could ever do,” Flea remembers. “I just felt like we were this roaming band of gypsies. We show up, and we rock you.”

What Drives Us features interviews with Tony Kanal (No Doubt), Charlie Gabriel (Preservation Hall Jazz Band), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), The Edge (U2), Ben Harper, Kira Roessler (Black Flag), Slash & Duff McKagan (Guns N’Roses), D.H. Peligro (Dead Kennedys), Exene Cervenka (X), Starcrawler, Pete Stahl (Scream), Radkey, and Ian MacKaye (Fugazi/Minor Threat).

“There’s no guarantee that it’ll ever pay off,” Grohl narrates. “The reward has to be the experience.”

Conversely, another clip for the film explores the smelly underbelly of the van lifestyle. From St. Vincent to Brian Johnson to Ringo Starr, everyone shares their experiences with passing gas in a van full of people.

“If you fart, admit it,” Ringo says, laughing. “In the van, because it causes so much trouble.”
