Robert Glasper welcomed special guests Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock during his performance on Sunday at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York. The concert was the latest in the pianist’s extensive 33-date, 66-show residency at the iconic New York venue.

Chappelle and Rock crashing Glasper’s set is almost as much of a tradition as the pianist’s residencies themselves. The two comedians also joined Glasper for an impromptu sit-in along with Common at the Blue Note back in June. By this point, Chappelle and Rock made themselves right at home, having plenty of fun themselves regardless of what the paying audience thought.

“Are we at the point yet where people like, ‘I didn’t pay for this shit’?” Rock said in the midst of the pop-up comedy show. “‘It was cute at, at first, but goddammit.'”

Rock and Chappelle enjoyed a playful back and forth with each other for the laid-back, free-flowing set. Rock had contracted COVID earlier this year, saying of the experience, “It wasn’t quite as hard as being black. But it was close.”

The two even got Glasper involved before handing off the stage. The musician seemed to enjoy the stand-ups more than anyone else, gleefully interacting with the comedic legends while capturing cell phone videos.

“How long you here, Robert?” Rock asked. “Next three years of my f*cking life,” the pianist responded. “What is this, the Child Support Tour?” Rock quipped in response.

Watch Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle join Robert Glasper’s set at the Blue Note. His residency continues tomorrow, October 5th, and runs through November 7th. Various special engagements are on the horizon, including shows with his band August Greene (with Common and Karriem Riggins), Meshell Ndegeocello, his band Dinner Party (with Terrace Martin + special guests), Black Radio with PJ Morton & Bilal, and more.
