Last Thursday, Robert Randolph & The Family Band helped kick off the Summer Concert Series at Washington, D.C.’s Entertainment & Sports Arena, presented by Events DC.
Following an opening set by DuPont Brass, Randolph and company took the stage for their headlining set. Of note, the lineup for the D.C. blowout featured drummer Nikkie Glaspie, known for her work with everyone from Maceo Parker to Beyonce to her own band, The Nth Power.
Randolph, the renowned Sacred Steel guitar master, led the Family Band through a rousing set that kept the crowd on its toes. Toward the end of the show, the band even rotated instruments for a song, showing off the extensive talents of the musicians onstage.
The show’s encore packed in even more celebratory energy as Randolph writhed and kicked his way through nearly twenty minutes of searing gospel-soul heat before landing in a cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s “Foxey Lady”.
