As society progresses forward, more and more we are forced to look back and confront our history. In the midst of this progress, we must let go of certain things, be that Confederate-era monuments, the names of professional sports teams, or even band names like the recently-updated Lady Antebellum (a.k.a “Lady A”, lawsuit pending). Some of these influences are so ingrained in our culture that their negative societal impact is easily overlooked.

One of these many ingrained instances of racial inequality comes from the song “Turkey in the Straw”, more commonly known as the ice cream truck jingle. It turns out that, while the song’s melody originated in Irish and British folk tunes, once it arrived in the United States the song was often used in minstrel shows, which were merely a crude collection of songs, dances, and sketches that specifically targeted people of African descent in the 1800s. Oftentimes the song would even be changed to include racist lyrics.

Luckily, Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA has stepped up to help this country learn from, and move past its oppressive history, and has created a new ice cream truck song for everyone. In collaboration with Good Humor, RZA went to work to craft “A new jingle, for a new era.”

“We wanted to make a melody that includes all communities, that’s good for every driver, every kid,” RZA said in a video announcing the new jingle. “And I’m proud to say, for the first time in a long time, a new ice cream truck jingle will be made available for trucks all across the country in perpetuity, that means forever like Wu Tang is forever. And I can assure you that this one is made with love.”
