In recent weeks, The Black Keys (finally) announced their return to the road and released “Hi/Lo”, their first new track since their 2014 album, Turn Blue. In addition to all the Black Keys news, drummer Patrick Carney announced the formation of a new band, Sad Planets, featuring John Petkovic of Cobra Verde, Sweet Apple, and Death Of Samantha. Sad Planets’ debut album, Akron, Ohio, is due out this Friday, April 19th via Tee Pee Records.

On the new album, Petkovic plays guitar and handles lead vocals, while Carney plays drums and other added percussion instruments and synths. The album was recorded in Carney’s studio in Akron, and a press release calls the sessions “a celebration of their friendship.” Carney and Petkovic are both Akron, Ohio natives, though the former has moved to Nashville and the latter now resides in Cleveland.

Following the release of Akron, Ohio’s lead singles “Not Of This World” and “Yesterday Girl”, Sad Planets has shared a new track, “Just Landed”, featuring Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis on lead guitar.

“J grabbed my guitar and just started playing along so we hit record,” Petkovic explained in a statement. “It sums up the entire process… we would come up with chords and songs on the spot.”
